Galatea is located in the centre of Aci Castello – a marvellous historic little town only 2km from Catania where the sun, sea, hospitality and gastronomy join history and mythology in a perfect union.
Aci Castello is developed around the Norman Castle dominating the town square. Built with lava rocks by the Normans in the 11th century, the Castle nowadays houses the Civic Museum as well as a popular wedding ceremony venue and other cultural events. You can enjoy a spectacular view of the vicinity including Faraglioni, Aci Trezza and Lachea Isle.
In addition to the castle, Aci Castello is also home to some nice beaches. The neighbouring town Aci Trezza, a commune of Aci Castello easily reached by foot, is a popular summer resort. Just off the coast of Aci Trezza you can see columnar islands known as the Cyclops islands. The legend goes to tell that the Cyclops once lived here and those islands are the boulders the Cyclops threw in the sea. Aci Trezza hosts a lively fish market and numerous bars and restaurants featuring delicious fresh sea food and local delicacies. The town also features the Lachea Island transformed into a Marine Nature Reserve filled with intriguing examples of flora and fauna.
Here you can find a typical Mediterranean climate with short and mild winters, splendid springs, hot summers and a colourful autumn. Aci Castello is a perfect destination for those who want to spend quality time away from the hustle and bustle of busy touristic destinations yet to be in close reach to the wanders of the area. It is a very convenient starting point for the various trips and excursions which form part of Galatea’s rich cultural programme.
You can sample the local delicacies in one of the many restaurants and bars featuring popular fish dishes, wines, pizza, pastries and gelato.
